Board OKS plan for new fire station
By Mark Wineka Salisbury Post A new Salisbury fire station on Statesville Boulevard will be a mix of metal and masonry with modular living quarters attached. The Salisbury Planning Board approved a site plan for the four-bay station Tuesday. It will be the city's fourth fire station, if Salisbury City Council approves its construction and staffing in the 2005-2006 budget. The station building would measure 5,740 square feet, and the living quarters would account for 1,960 square feet. City officials plan to build the station at 2325 Statesville Blvd., near Godley's Garden Center, to help cover a western Salisbury area recently annexed. Development Services Manager David Phillips said the city is working with the N.C. Department of Transportation to have cuts made in the proposed median for U.S. 70 so fire equipment could turn left out of station. Landscaping requirements for street trees that must go with the station were revised so the trees don't cause sight problems for trucks leaving the station in an emergency. The Planning Board approved a couple of other site plans for building projects in this same area of Salisbury. On Lash Drive, near the Salisbury Mall, the board endorsed an expansion plan at The Laurels nursing home. The 5,360-square-foot project would add a two-story addition to each of three wings at The Laurels. Last year, the city approved a separate occupational therapy section at the nursing facility. Near the corner of Jake Alexander and Statesville boulevards, First National Bank (formerly Rowan Savings Bank) resubmitted its plans for a bank because the site has expanded. Bank officials expect to carry out the project in two phases. The first phase will include a two-story, 9,860-square-foot bank facing Jake Alexander Boulevard with driveways connecting to Jake Alexander and Statesville boulevards. The bank will provide sidewalks on both streets. In the second phase, the bank probably will try to provide access off Wood Avenue. The Planning Board recommended approval provided the bank receives the necessary driveway permits from the N.C. Department of Transportation and resolves what to do with an existing alley that runs through the site and connects with Jake Alexander Boulevard. Salisbury City Council must give final approval to the site plans endorsed by the Planning Board. Contact Mark Wineka at 704-797-4263 or mwineka@salisburypost.com.
