ANIMAL CONTROL SPECIALIST
DEFINITION
To perform enforcement of the City's regulations
pertaining to animal control, licensing, problems and complaints; and to
conduct educational programs regarding animal care.
SUPERVISION
RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general supervision from Police
Captain-Services.
Exercises no supervision.
EXAMPLES
OF DUTIES - Duties may
include, but are not limited to, the following:
Enforcement of animal control laws and
ordinances.
Investigate complaints, bites and cruelty
reports, and perform case follow-ups and inform owner of proper disposition of
animals.
Educate the public about animal control laws and
ordinances, complaint procedures, pet care and other animal related issues.
Impound, secure and transport stray animals.
Compile reports and maintain records.
Clean and maintain equipment such as the vehicle
and cages used to transport and contain animals.
Assist other agencies in animal control
procedures.
Assist with rabies investigations and perform
euthanasia.
Prepare and provide court testimony.
Respond to job call back after working hours
and/or on weekends.
Perform related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Geography
of the jurisdiction.

Pertinent
Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations.
Principles,
practices and procedures of humane handling and impoundment of animals.
Basic
animal behavior, diseases, breeds and care.
Ability to:
Operate necessary animal control
equipment such as: traps, tranquilizer
guns, catch-poles, cages, etc.
Interpret and apply applicable
Federal, State and local laws, rules, regulations and policies.
Prepare
and maintain accurate records and reports.
Maintain
good public relations.
Handle
large and/or vicious animals.
Assume
responsibility in administering euthanasia and handling injured or dead
animals.
Respond
to job call back.
While
performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit
and talk and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; use
hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands
and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell.
The employee must
occasionally lift and/or move more than 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities
required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and
peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

EDUCATION,
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Any combination of education, experience and
training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is
qualifying. A typical way to obtain the
knowledge and abilities would be:
Education:
Equivalent
to completion of the twelfth grade.
Experience:
No
experience is required. One year of
experience in animal
care/control is desirable.
Training:
Additional specialized training in
animal care and handling or a related field is desirable.
LICENSE
OR CERTIFICATE
Possession of, or ability to obtain, an
appropriate and valid North Carolina driver's license.
Possession of residential telephone service
required.
