CRIME ANALYST
This position is responsible for the systematic process of collecting, categorizing, analyzing, and disseminating useful information in a timely manner that describes crime patterns, crime trends, and information on possible suspects. The position is responsible for maintenance of the Geographic Information System (GIS), Computer Aided Dispatch System (CAD), and System and Records Management System (RMS).
Received direction from Police Chief.
Exercise functional and technical supervision.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES - Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Collect and analyze data related to crimes, departmental operations, new techniques and concepts in law enforcement, and resource allocations.
Prepare reports and graphics to document research and statistics for distribution to departmental and City staff, and other public and private agencies.
Assist management and other employees with planning, research, and evaluation of department programs.
Recommend changes in policies or procedures when indicated by data analysis.
Assist in preparation of the departmental budget through research and analysis of data collected.
Respond to requests from the news media relating to crime statistics.
Prepare and make community and public presentations.
Work with City Planning Department on GIS issues.
Manage the department’s patrol plan through computer-generated reports.
Instruct department personnel in the use of the computer system.
Respond to job callback after hours and/or on weekends.

Knowledge of:
Principles, practices and procedures of crime analysis, data collection and statistical analysis.
Principles, practices and procedures of Geographic Information Software, Computer Automated Dispatch and Records Management System.
State and Local Laws and Ordinances.
Departmental polices and procedures.
Geography and demography of the jurisdiction.
Community policing as a management style.
Ability
to:
Analyze statistics and determine crime trends or patterns.
Create clear and concise reports.
Make recommendations to administrative personnel concerning crime hot spots, trends, and patterns.
Assist investigative personnel on developing suspects.
Make formal presentations concerning crime statistics and related information.
Utilize department computer system.
Respond to job call back.
While performing the
duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and talk or
hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; use hands to
finger, handle, or operate objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and
arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell.
The employee must
occasionally lift and/or move more than 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities
required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision,
peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:
Three years of police service, statistical analysis, or Crime analysis experience. Three years of computer and information systems experience.
Training:
Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in information technology or a related field.
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE
Possession of, or the ability to obtain, an appropriate and valid North Carolina driver’s license.
Possession of residential telephone service is required.
