FIRE
ENGINEER
DEFINITION
To perform the safe
operation of various fire fighting equipment and apparatus in the Fire
Department; and to perform associated duties in the operation of equipment
aboard such vehicle as well as to participate in fire fighting, fire
prevention, training, and emergency medical services.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the advanced
journey level class in the Fire Control Specialist series. Positions at this level are distinguished
from the other classes within the series by the level of responsibility assumed
and the complexity of duties assigned.
Employees perform the most difficult and responsible type of duties
assigned to classes within this series including the transportation of
equipment, personnel, and apparatus to incidents in an expedient and safe
manner; to operate all forms of apparatus, pumps and ladder trucks. Employees at this level are required to be
fully trained in all procedures related to assigned area of responsibility.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general
supervision from Fire Captain.
Exercises functional
and technical supervision over assigned technical staff.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES - Duties may include, but are not limited to,
the following:
Drive apparatus, equipment
and personnel to alarms.
Operate pump to
supply proper amount of pressure and water or other agents to the proper hose,
nozzle, appliance and connections for the suppression of fire or containment of
hazardous materials.
Operate aerial
devices to perform rescue, master stream operations and exposure protection.
Provide fire control
and/or first respondent medical attention.
Inspect and maintain
equipment to ensure proper operations.
Assist in training
personnel in equipment and apparatus operation, and in vehicle operation and
maintenance.
Participate in fire
inspections and fire prevention projects.
Prepare operational
reports.

Assist with station
maintenance.
Respond to job call
back after working hours and/or on weekends.
Perform related
duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge
of:
All fire control apparatus and
equipment.
Principles of hydraulic operations.
Apparatus operations in relation to
fire ground tactics.
Layout of City streets, facilities,
business and buildings.
Fire hydrant locations and
operations.
Methods
of laying hose, operations of nozzles, fire streams and foam operations, and
salvage and overhaul procedures.
Operation and appropriate use of
various hand and power tools.
Hazardous materials.
Pertinent Federal, State and local
laws, codes and regulations.
Ability
to:
Maintain physical condition as
required.
Operate all fire apparatus properly.
Inspect, maintain and operate
equipment.
Perform emergency rescue procedures,
and administer basic life support and first aid.
Work effectively under stress.
Plan work flow charts and read
graphs.

Communicate clearly and concisely,
both orally and in writing.
Read and interpret maps.
Conduct company inspections of
commercial properties.
Conduct fire safety instruction
sessions.

While performing the
duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; talk or hear;
stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or operate objects, tools, or
controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required
to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell.
The employee must
frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move
up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close
vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and
the ability to adjust focus.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Any combination of
education, experience and training that would likely provide the required
knowledge and abilities is qualifying.
A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education:
Equivalent to the completion of the
twelfth grade.
Experience:
Three years of increasingly
responsible fire control experience.
Training:
Additional specialized training in
Fire Science or a related field is desirable.

LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE
Possession of, or
ability to obtain, an appropriate and valid North Carolina driver's license.
Possession of, or the
ability to obtain, a valid Emergency Medical Technician Certification.
Possession of
residential telephone service required.
