            FLEET SERVICES SHIFT SUPERVISOR

 

DEFINITION

 

To plan, organize and supervise the Preventative Maintenance Program for all City fleet units, and all mechanical maintenance and repair work performed on the second shift within the Public Services-Fleet Division; and to perform a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

 

Receives direction from assigned department or division head.

 

Exercise direct supervision over assigned staff.

 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES - Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

 

Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise and review the work of staff involved in preventative maintenance and mechanical repair of City fleet and City equipment.

 

Conduct employee performance evaluation process for assigned employees and maintain supporting documentation.

 

Recommend and assist in the implementation of department/division goals and objectives; establish schedules and methods for performing mechanical maintenance on, and providing services for, City fleet and City equipment; and implement policies and procedures.

 

Evaluate operations and activities relative to assigned area of responsibility; recommend improvements and modifications; and prepare various reports on operations and activities.

 

Organize and facilitate Involvement and Response Team meeting for assigned employees and submit transmittals as required.

 

Maintain equipment and supply inventories using departmental purchasing procedures.

 

Prepare all work orders for the second shift.

 

Analyze equipment/vehicle operator's complaints before beginning repairs.

 

Assist Parts Manager in determining proper level of parts inventory to be maintained; and assist Parts Manager with completion of reports.

 

Assist Fleet Services Supervisor in maintenance of proper tires inventory.

Maintain records of motor fuel and oil inventory.

 

Prepare weekly diesel reports.

 

Schedule equipment for maintenance.

 

Record work order number associated with equipment condition for cross reference.

 

Accompany mechanics on service calls when necessary.

 

Request wrecker service when necessary.

 

Perform North Carolina vehicle inspections.

 

Check Fleet Services compound nightly to ensure security.

 

Determine when necessary to replace tires on City vehicles.

 

Remain aware of state vehicle inspection laws and OSHA requirements.

 

Respond to job call back.

 

Participate in budget preparation and administration as required by department or division head; and prepare cost estimates and justifications for recommendations.

 

Participate in selection of staff as required by department or division head; provide staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies; and implement discipline procedures.

 

Answer questions and provide information to the public; and investigate complaints and take corrective action as directed by department or division head.

 

Perform related duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

            Knowledge of:

 

            Principles, practices and procedures of garage operations.

 

            Methods and technical requirements of auto, truck and equipment maintenance and repair.

            Principles of supervision, training and performance evaluation.

 

            Laws and/or ordinances related to assigned area.

 

            Principles and procedures of financial record keeping, budgeting and reporting.

 

            Basic office procedures; and office and computer equipment.

 

            Ability to:

 

            Supervise an effective fleet maintenance program.

 

            Communicate effectively in oral and written form.

 

            Supervise, train and evaluate assigns staff.

 

            Facilitate Involvement and Response Team meetings.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  The employee is occasionally required to walk, sit and talk or hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift weights up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

 

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

 

Any combination of education, experience and training that provides evidence of the knowledge, skills and abilities required to be successful in performing the duties assigned to the job class.

 

            Education:

 

            Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.  Completion of a degree or certificate program in auto maintenance and repair is desirable.

           

            Experience:

 

Three years responsible mechanic experience.  One year of supervisory experience is desirable.

            Specialized training in auto mechanic and repair is desirable.

 

LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE

 

Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate and valid North Carolina driver's license.

 

Possession of, or ability to obtain, a North Carolina Motor Vehicle Inspector's license.
