IDENTIFICATION SPECIALIST

 

DEFINITION

 

To perform technical services in the Police Department Crime Laboratory which involves the use of general and specialized equipment; to coordinate efforts at crime scene; and to identify and match evidence.

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

 

Receives general supervision from the Police Sergeant.

 

Exercises no supervision.

 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES - Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

 

Perform as specialized photographer by taking pictures, darkroom developing, printing and enlargement of pictures, video taping, and maintaining appropriate files.

 

Perform as a specialist in printing, lifting, identifying and classifying fingerprints using the Henry Classification System.

 

Perform as a specialist in collecting and reporting all types of evidence found at a crime scene such as:  blood samples, hair samples, fiber samples, gun powder residue and drug testing.

 

Maintain a good working file on all collected evidence and maintain fingerprint card file and mug shot file.

 

Maintain inventory of materials used and needed; and reorder supplies as needed.

 

Perform basic maintenance on all issued equipment such as cameras, vehicle and booking room equipment.

 

Assist in updating criminalistic training for patrol officers.

 

Testify in court as a witness in fingerprinting and photography; and prepare visual aid evidence for presentation in court.

 

Attend and photograph/video tape all autopsies resulting from suspicious deaths.

 

Respond to job call back after working hours and/or on weekends.

 

Perform related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

 

            Knowledge of:

 

            Methods and techniques of police photography.

 

            Methods and techniques of fingerprinting using the Henry Classification System.

 

            Principles and procedures of record keeping and reporting.

 

            Principles of chemistry and corresponding field and laboratory procedures.

 

            Ability to:

 

            Effectively administer a variety of crime scene activities.

 

            Interpret and apply applicable Federal, State and local laws, rules, regulations and policies.

 

            Perform as a Police Officer.

 

            Collect and process all crime scene evidence.

 

            Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

 

            Respond to job call back.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and talk and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell.

 

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move more than 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

 

Any combination of education, experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

 

            Education:

 

Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by college level course work in Police             Science or a related field. 

 

Experience:

 

Three years as a certified Law Enforcement Officer.  Two years of responsible identification specialist experience is desirable.

 

            Training:

           

            Additional specialized training in photography and             fingerprinting or related field.

 

LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE

 

Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate and valid North Carolina driver's license.

 

Possession of, or ability to obtain, certification awarded by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission.

 

Possession of residential telephone service required.
