Laboratory Analyst
Job Duties
1. Analyze
and/or collect water, wastewater, and industrial discharge samples. Includes
operation of automatic sampling equipment, collection of samples to assess
potable water quality/safety, investigation of consumer water quality
complaints, monitoring at industrial discharge sites, at streams and water
distribution lines. Includes notification to appropriate City departments or
other governmental agencies of results.
2. Prepare
laboratory reagents and solutions.
3. Test
laboratory data against quality control criteria.
4. Record
data from field monitoring and laboratory analysis, report unusual results.
5. Make
recommendations based on evaluation of laboratory data.
6. Operate,
test, maintain, and calibrate laboratory instruments as assigned.
7. Other
duties as requested or required.
Minimum qualifications
require a high school diploma or equivalent and a valid North Carolina driver’s
license. A residential telephone
service is required. Must be able to obtain
any laboratory analyst certification required by the state of North Carolina.
Desired qualifications
include a bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, environmental science or a
natural science and two years experience in a municipal, industrial, or
commercial water or wastewater laboratory.
Physical
Qualifications
Must have adequate dexterity
to efficiently complete laboratory analyses, operate a computer keyboard, and
perform similar tasks. Must be able to pass a respirometer examination, use a
protective respirator, and perform strenuous outdoor work collecting water and
wastewater samples, inspecting industrial facilities, and locating collection
system sampling points.
