LANDSCAPE MAINTENANCE SUPERVISOR
DEFINITION
To plan, organize and supervise the landscaping
and grounds maintenance within the Public Services Department-Landscape
Operations Division; and to perform a variety of technical tasks relative to
assigned area of responsibility.
SUPERVISION
RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives direction from assigned division head.
Exercises direct supervision over assigned staff.
EXAMPLES
OF DUTIES - Duties may
include, but are not limited to, the following:
Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise and review
the work of staff involved in the installation of new landscapes and the
maintenance of all landscapes on City property and right-of-ways.
Conduct employee performance evaluation process
for assigned employees and maintain supporting documentation.
Recommend and assist in the implementation of
department/division goals and objectives; establish schedules and methods for
landscaping and grounds maintenance of City property and right-of-ways; and
implement policies and procedures.
Evaluate operations and activities relative to
assigned area of responsibility; recommend improvements and modifications; and
prepare various reports on operations and activities.
Organize and facilitate Involvement and Response
Team meeting for assigned employees and submit transmittals as required.
Maintain equipment and supply inventories using
departmental purchasing procedures.
Maintain plants at City Hall.
Obtain materials from local vendors.
Monitor the preparation of new landscape sites
for planting; and install plants in new sites and seed all new grass areas.
Ensure that all grassy areas assigned are mowed
on a regular schedule and that all mowing contracts are followed as stipulated.

Assist the City Code Inspector with nuisance
abatement projects.
Ensure that all plants on public landscapes are
fertilized, pruned and otherwise cared for.
Supervise and participate in the treatment of all
landscaped areas for insect, disease and weed control.
Supervise and participate in tree planting,
removal and pruning.
Responsible for watering all landscaped areas.
Maintain various City owned landscaped areas and
right-of-ways.
Participate in budget preparation and
administration as required by department or division head; and prepare cost
estimates and justifications for recommendations.
Participate in selection of staff as required by
department or division head; provide staff training; work with employees to correct
deficiencies; and implement discipline procedures.
Answer questions and provide information to the
public; and investigate complaints and take corrective action as directed by
department or division head.
Respond to job callback.
Perform related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Principles,
practices and procedures of landscaping and grounds maintenance.
Methods
and technical requirements of landscaping and grounds maintenance.
Principles
of supervision, training and performance evaluation.
Laws
and/or ordinances related to assigned area.
Principles
and procedures of financial record keeping, budgeting and reporting.
Basic
office procedures; and office and computer equipment.

Ability to:
Supervise
an effective landscape maintenance program.
Communicate
effectively in oral and written form.
Supervise,
train and evaluate assigned staff.
Facilitate
Involvement and Response Team meetings.
Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
Must be able to perform very heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally: 50 pounds of force frequently: and 20 pounds constantly.
Must posses the visual acuity to operate mobile equipment such as the backhoe and dump truck in a safe manner.
EDUCATION,
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Any combination of education, experience and
training that provides evidence of the knowledge, skills and abilities required
to be successful in performing the duties assigned to the job class.
Education:
Equivalent to the
completion of the twelfth grade. An AA
degree from an accredited community college in landscaping or a related area is
desirable.
Experience:
Three years
responsible landscape or grounds experience.
One year supervisory experience desirable.
Training:
Additional
specialized training in landscaping or grounds maintenance is desirable.

LICENSE
OR CERTIFICATE
Possession of, or ability to obtain, an
appropriate and valid North Carolina driver's license.
Prefer possession of State Pesticide Applicator’s
License (ornamentals and turf).
