  MECHANIC

 

DEFINITION

 

To perform mechanical duties to diagnose and repair problems with City fleet/transit buses; to service and clean City fleet/transit buses; and to maintain work order files.

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

 

Receives general supervision from assigned management and supervisory staff.

 

Exercises functional and technical supervision over assigned maintenance and technical staff.

 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES - Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

 

When assigned to Fleet Division:

 

Diagnose and repair mechanical problems with the City fleet.

 

Diagnose and repair mechanical problems with various types of City equipment.

 

Provide preventive maintenance for City fleet.

 

Perform maintenance work on electrical systems, brake systems gas and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, and air systems.

 

Perform grease and oil changes for City fleet.

 

Replace and repair tires.

 

Perform welding, cutting and fabrication of steel parts and components.

 

Operate various tools and machinery in a safe and responsible manner.

 

Keep supervisor informed of work done and parts used.

 

Prepare and modify vehicles and equipment to meet City departmental needs.

 

Overhaul City fleet engines, transmissions and rear axles.

 

Perform front-end alignment on City fleet.

 

Provide service calls for City fleet as needed.

Dispense gasoline and oil to units in the field.

 

Perform North Carolina State vehicle safety inspections and submit reports to the DMV.

 

Assist in maintaining and cleaning facilities and equipment.

 

Perform related duties as assigned.

 

When assigned to Transit Operations:

 

Diagnose and repair mechanical problems with Transit fleet.

 

Provide preventive maintenance on Transit fleet.

 

Perform maintenance work on electrical systems, brake systems, diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, and air systems.

 

Perform grease and oil changes on Transit fleet.

 

Replace and repair tires.

 

Perform minor modifications on Transit buses.

 

Operate various tools and machinery in a safe and responsible manner.

 

Keep Transit Manager informed of work done and parts used.

 

Provide service calls for Transit fleet as needed.

 

Dispense diesel fuel and oil to units in the field.

 

Perform North Carolina State vehicle safety inspections and submit reports to the DMV.

 

Assist in maintaining and cleaning facilities and equipment.

 

Perform related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

 

            Knowledge of:

 

            Practices and procedures of vehicle and equipment maintenance.

 

            Methods and techniques of diagnosing vehicle and equipment problems.

 

            Procedure and machines used in performing front end alignment.

 

            State regulations for inspecting vehicles.

 

            Procedure and tools used in engine overhaul and electrical systems.

 

            Procedures for alternate diagnosis and repair of vehicle problems.

 

            Operation of shop equipment, tools, and machines for vehicle and equipment maintenance.

 

            Pertinent safety procedures.

 

            Various test equipment for diagnosing vehicle and equipment problems.

 

            Principles of operation of gasoline and diesel engines.

 

            General repair procedures, such as for brakes and electrical systems.

 

            Ability to:

 

            Operate tools and machines for vehicle and equipment maintenance.

 

            Diagnose problems with vehicles and equipment.

 

            Perform front-end alignment on vehicles.

 

            Perform North Carolina State Inspections.

 

            Overhaul vehicle engines, transmissions and rear axles.

 

            Perform major diesel engine repairs.

 

            Maintain vehicle electrical systems.

            Identify and resolve tool and equipment problems and needs.

 

            Establish and implement new mechanical methods.

 

            Understand and follow instructions.

 

            Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

 

            Maintain a clean and organized garage area.

 

Establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

 

The employee is occasionally required to walk, sit and talk or hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift weights up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

 

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES

 

Any combination of education, experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

 

            Education:

 

            Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade is required.

 

            Experience:

 

            Two years of mechanic experience is required.

 

            Training:

 

            Technical school or other formal training related to vehicular and/or equipment repair and maintenance is desirable.

LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE

 

Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate and valid North Carolina CDL driver's license.

 

Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate and valid inspection license issued by the State of North Carolina.
