PARK CURATOR
DEFINITION
To perform duties
related to the intensive management of a public park and garden; and to
implement landscape designs and maintain garden areas within the park.
SUPERVISION
RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general
supervision from the Landscape Maintenance Manager.
Exercises functional
and technical supervision over assigned maintenance and technical staff.
EXAMPLES OF
DUTIES - Duties may include,
but are not limited to, the following:
Interpret and implement
landscape plans; and plant trees, shrubs, annuals, and perennial according to
landscape design.
Assist in planning of
new garden areas; and consult with Landscape Architect and Landscape
Maintenance Manager regarding plans for the park and garden.
Research potential
new plants appropriate for the park and garden; and order plants for the
gardens.
Maintain current
garden areas; and prune shrubs and trees.
Complete accession
records for new plants and type identification labels for new plants.
Prepare and edit
newsletter about the parks; and maintain mailing list for the newsletter.
Attend Park Advisory
Board meetings.
Prepare monthly
reports for appropriate committees.
Monitor plants'
fertilizer and pest control needs and implants treatments.
Maintain and operate
irrigation system; and monitor plants' need for water.
Respond to public
inquiries about the park; photograph park activities; and make public
presentations regarding the park.

Maintain clean park
grounds.
Perform related
duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Growing habits and requirements of
native and exotic plants.
Methods and techniques of planting
and pruning plants.
Principles, practices and procedures
of irrigation.
Pesticides and their safe use.
Plant accession (Scientific Names of
Plants)
Ability to:
Interpret
and apply landscape design principles and procedures.
Work in varied and extreme weather
conditions.
Communicate clearly and concisely,
both orally and in writing.
Establish
and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the
course of work.
Maintain an organized records
system.
Prepare a park newsletter.
Detect
abnormal par conditions (temperature, moisture) and to take appropriate
corrective action.
Train and oversee the work of
seasonal employees.

While performing the
duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; use
hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach
with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or
balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear.
The employee must
occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision,
distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the
ability to adjust focus.
EDUCATION,
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Any combination of education
experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and
abilities in qualifying. A typical way
to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education:
Equivalent to an
Associate Arts degree from an accredited college with major course work in
Horticulture or a related field.
Experience:
Two years of responsible Park
Curator or Landscape experience.
Training:
None.
LICENSE OR
CERTIFICATE
Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate and valid North Carolina driver's license.
