Broadband Technician I                               FLSA Status:  Non-Exempt

General Definition of Work

Performs intermediate technical work assisting in all aspects of Salisbury's outside optical fiber plant; performs optical fiber splicing, customer service drop installation and splicing, customer premise installations and residential and business wiring, and related work as apparent or assigned.  Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Service Delivery Manager.

Essential Functions

Performs duties in accordance with the City's keys to excellent customer service.

Works with most aspects of the optical fiber plant including the installation and testing of service drops.

Assists in the complete and thorough documentation of all fiber provisioning.

Performs drop splicing, testing and validations.

Serves as a first responder in the event of a fiber damage occurrence; provides assistance in restoring plant integrity.

Performs routine utility locates, fault locating and restoration in the event of plant damage and response in the event of a system outage.

Coordinates with team members to maintain proper vehicle and warehouse inventory levels.

Conducts maintenance and upkeep of the fiber optic system.

Participates in departmental planning meetings as required.

Assists with new build projects and plant extensions as requested relative to the fiber plant.

Supports Salisbury's Optical Fiber Network; assists in maintaining the records and documentation of the optical fiber plant; assists with NOC operations; provides service and maintenance as requested; provides customer support in the role of a service technician.

May be required to work outside normal work hours in emergency or on-call situations.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Some knowledge of splicing, particularly with loose tube optical fiber including preparation, organization and documentation; some knowledge of and experience with coaxial and twisted pair in-home wiring configurations; some experience in the repair and restoration of aerial and underground facilities including fiber optic lines, enclosures, splice cabinets, terminals, vaults, aerial strand and hardware; working knowledge of MS Windows based software programs; skill in the use of the latest in equipment and technologies relative to performing the job; ability to communicate ideas effectively both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, vendors, consultants, other municipality representatives and the general public.

 

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED and moderate experience in fiber splicing, testing and validations, plant maintenance and restoration, premise installation and service, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Physical Requirements

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather) and exposure to the risk of electrical shock; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).

 

Special Requirements

Experience with a previous FTTH deployment is preferred.

Valid driver's license in the State of North Carolina.
