Cemetery Operations Manager                               FLSA Status:  Exempt

General Definition of Work

Performs intermediate skilled technical work managing and maintaining the cemetery, maintaining records and files, preparing reports, and related work as apparent or assigned.  Work is performed under the general direction of the Public Services Director.  Divisional supervision is exercised over all personnel within the division.

Essential Functions

Performs duties in accordance with the City's keys to excellent customer service; acts as team or group leader in the implementation of adopted City outcomes and goals.

Organizes, directs and manages division activities including sales, maintaining and coordinating the services of municipal cemeteries; oversees grave openings and closings; verifies and lays out grave sites.

Supervises the daily activities of cemetery maintenance staff.

Directs, oversees and participates in the development of the division work plan; assigns and coordinates work activities, projects and programs; monitors work flow; reviews and evaluates completed work, methods and procedures.

Answers telephone; greets visitors; responds to various citizen inquiries and complaints; assists visitors with location information and escorts them to sites if needed.

Coordinates funeral arrangements with funeral homes.

Maintains cemetery records; prepares deeds and burial records; enters information into computer system.

Sells cemetery plots.

Initiates, conducts, reviews and coordinates needed personnel transactions including recruitment, selection, classification, compensation, evaluation, promotion, transfer, discipline and termination.

Prepares the division annual budget; approves and monitors expenditures authorized in the annual budget.

Maintains cemetery vehicle and equipment inventory lists, service and daily maintenance records.

Monitors cemetery alarm system.

Enforces cemetery ordinances.

May be required to work outside of normal business hours in on-call or emergency situations.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of the operation and maintenance of a cemetery; thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work and related equipment operation; ability to plan and supervise the work of maintenance personnel; ability to perform work outdoors throughout the year; ability to read and interpret a cemetery map; tact in dealing with the public; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, the bereaved, funeral directors, vendors and the general public.

 

Education and Experience

Associates/Technical degree with coursework in business administration, or related field and considerable experience in cemetery management, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Physical Requirements

This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting and speaking or hearing, frequently requires standing and walking and occasionally requires pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires working near moving mechanical parts; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).

Valid driver's license in the State of North Carolina.
