Cemetery Supervisor                                   FLSA Status:  Non-Exempt

General Definition of Work

Performs difficult semiskilled work operating tractors, dump truck and other light to heavy motorized equipment, performing general maintenance work, and related work as apparent or assigned.  Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the assigned department supervisor.  Limited supervision is exercised over subordinate crew members.

Essential Functions

Performs duties in accordance with the City's keys to excellent customer service; encourages and promotes a culture of excellent customer service.

Calls in daily crew duties to public services office; answers office telephone; takes burial information.

Reads cemetery maps; researches office records for deceased place of burial; prepares paperwork and receives payments for burials.

Lays out graves; oversees the opening and closing of graves.

Operates street sweepers and flushers in the cleaning of streets and sidewalks.

Drives dump truck in the hauling of gravel, sand, pipe, brush and other materials; operates front-end loader and backhoe for loading trucks with dirt, stone, etc.; picks up sticks, tree limbs, etc.

Operates a leaf machine in the collection of leaves and debris; operates various equipment in the construction, maintenance and repair of street and sidewalks; operates various light to heavy equipment as required.

Assists with snow removal and ice control.

Makes daily checks on equipment for fuel, proper levels of fluid and other checks to ensure the safe operation of the equipment assigned.

Cleans catch basins and storm drains; prepares and sets concrete forms; pours concrete.

Assists with marking street closings by placing and removing cones, barricades, and signs for various events.

Serves as a lead worker; assigns, directs, trains and insects the work of assigned personnel.

May be required to work outside normal work hours in on-call and emergency situations.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; thorough knowledge of safe driving practices and occupational hazards of the work; general knowledge of the operation of automotive equipment; general knowledge of preventive maintenance requirements for equipment to which assigned; skill in operating automotive equipment; ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions; ability to detect signs of the mechanical failure of the automotive equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, funeral home representatives, vendors and the general public.

 

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED and moderate experience in equipment and machinery operation and some experience dealing with the public, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Physical Requirements

This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel and occasionally requires standing, walking, pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).

 

Special Requirements

Valid driver's license in the State of North Carolina.
