Crime Analyst - Civilian                                 FLSA Status:  Non-Exempt

General Definition of Work

Performs difficult protective service work analyzing crime and police incident patterns, assisting patrol and investigative units with operational strategies, assuring quality control of reporting procedures, assisting with special projects, and related work as apparent or assigned.  Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Police Lieutenant.

Essential Functions

Performs duties in accordance with the City's keys to excellent customer service.

Processes and analyzes computer, digital and video evidence.

Responds to the public, news media, department and city employee requests for crime data statistics and maps.

Performs information technology troubleshooting, repair and maintenance of department computer equipment and software; troubleshoots and repairs departmental audio-visual and electronic equipment and devices.

Maintains department website.

Analyzes crime trends and patterns through daily reports and logs.

Assists with computer and digital evidence seizures.

Produces crime scene diagrams and maps; assists with the crime scene and evidence processing and photography; updates and maintains the department’s electronic forms database; digitizes and creates electronic forms.

Maintains department employee permission and rights to computer servers, directories and files.

Creates and maintains department monthly and annual report templates; prepares various reports.

Assists with departmental digital computer, electronic, video and photographic equipment assessment and procurement.

Assists the District Attorney's Office with digital evidence, computer issues and courtroom visual aids.

Testifies in court regarding digital evidence.

Maintains the crime analysis section of the accreditation files.

May be assigned to work outside normal work hours in on-call or emergency situations.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of police investigative practices, techniques and procedures; thorough knowledge of analytical techniques; thorough knowledge of statistics and analytical techniques; thorough knowledge of the methods used to determine crime patterns; skill in operating a personal computer; ability to collect and analyze crime trend information; ability to use standard office equipment; ability to analyze data and draw conclusions; ability to keep accurate and detailed records, analyze complex data and prepare reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with attorneys, court personnel, associates, governmental agency representatives and the general public.

 

Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree with coursework in information technology, or related field and moderate experience in police service, statistical analysis or crime scene analysis, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Physical Requirements

This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting and speaking or hearing and occasionally requires standing and walking; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using measuring devices and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).

 

Special Requirements

Valid driver's license in the State of North Carolina.
