Equipment Operator I                                   FLSA Status:  Non-Exempt

General Definition of Work

Performs semiskilled work operating tractors, mowers, dump truck and other light to medium motorized equipment, performing general maintenance work, and related work as apparent or assigned.  Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the assigned departmental supervisor.

Essential Functions

Performs duties in accordance with the City's keys to excellent customer service.

Operates street sweepers and flushers in the cleaning of streets.

Drives dump trucks in the hauling of gravel, sand, pipe, brush and other materials.

Operates a leaf machine in the collection of leaves and debris.

Operates front-end loader, backhoe and bulldozer for loading trucks with dirt, stone, demolition clearing debris, backfilling for ditches, etc.

Operates various light to heavy equipment as required.

Performs general landscaping duties on job sites and assigned municipal facilities.

Assists with snow removal and ice control.

Makes daily checks on equipment for fuel, proper levels of fluid and other checks to ensure the safe operation of the equipment assigned.

May be required to work outside of normal work hours in on-call or emergency situations.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Thorough  knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; thorough knowledge of safe driving practices and occupational hazards of the work; general knowledge of the operation and servicing of automotive equipment; general knowledge of preventive maintenance requirements for equipment to which assigned; skill in the operation of automotive equipment; ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions; ability to detect signs of the mechanical failure of the automotive equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

 

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Physical Requirements

This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires standing and walking and occasionally requires pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration and frequently requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).

 

Special Requirements

Valid commercial driver's license in the State of North Carolina.
