Fire Control Specialist II FLSA
Status: Non-Exempt
General Definition of Work
Performs
protective service work responding to emergency fires and related situations,
participating in fire suppression and rescue operations, maintaining equipment
and facilities, continuing training and instruction, and related work as
apparent or assigned. Work is performed
under the moderate supervision of the Fire Captain. Limited oversight is exercised over
subordinate personnel in the absence of a Fire Captain.

Essential Functions
Performs
duties in accordance with City's keys to excellent customer service; encourages
and promotes a culture of excellent customer service.
Responds
to alarms and assists with suppressing fires, including rescue, entry,
ventilating, salvage work and first response emergency situations; prepares and
maintains daily operational logs and incident records.
Provides
basic life support service; performs detailed subjective and objective patient assessments
within established protocols, stabilization and treatment.
Performs
cleanup and overhaul work.
Assists
with maintaining fire apparatus and equipment and cleaning fire station and
grounds.
Operates
pumps and equipment at fire/emergency scenes; performs the duties of back-up
Fire Engineer as qualified and assigned; drives assigned apparatus to required
location.
Coaches
and counsels subordinate personnel; directs the work of and assists with
training subordinate personnel.
Inspects,
cleans and maintains fire hoses, pumps, hydrants and related equipment.
Conducts
demonstrations and programs for schools and the community.
Installs
smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
Participates
in continued training and instruction programs by individual study of technical
material and attendance at scheduled drills and classes.
May
be required to work outside normal work hours in on-call or emergency
situations.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Comprehensive
knowledge of the street system and physical layout of the city thorough
knowledge of firefighting techniques and procedures as applied to fire
suppression; thorough knowledge of fire prevention and pre-incident analysis
strategies and techniques; thorough knowledge of the operation and maintenance
of fire apparatus and equipment; general knowledge of hazardous materials
principles and techniques; general knowledge of accident extrication principles
and techniques; ability to learn technical firefighting principles and
techniques and principles of hydraulics as applied to fire suppression; ability to understand and follow oral and
written instructions; ability to compute simple mathematical formulas;
possession of mechanical aptitude; physical endurance and agility; ability to
establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the
general public.
Education and Experience
High school
diploma or GED and minimal experience in firefighting, or equivalent
combination of education and experience.
Physical Requirements
This work
requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional
exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or
hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires
standing, walking, pushing or pulling and lifting and occasionally requires
sitting, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling,
reaching with hands and arms and tasting or smelling; work requires close
vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color
perception, night vision and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required
for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying
detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly;
hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to
receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine
distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or
computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts,
operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general
surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor
weather conditions and exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), frequently
requires working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne
particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to vibration and
wearing a self contained breathing apparatus and occasionally requires wet,
humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, exposure
to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be
required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally
in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
Special Requirements
Possession of
North Carolina Firefighter I and II, Emergency Medical Technician-Basic and
Hazmat Awareness/Operations certifications.
Possession of
appropriate Driver/Operator and rescue technician certifications.
Must meet and
maintain all minimum state and local training and education requirements for
the position.
Valid class
driver's license in the State of North Carolina to operate any standard Fire
Department vehicle and tow any Fire Department trailer.
