Fire Engineer                                             FLSA Status:  Non-Exempt

General Definition of Work

Performs intermediate protective service work maintaining, servicing, driving and operating fire equipment, participating in continued training, assisting with station maintenance, and related work as apparent or assigned.  Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Fire Captain.  Limited supervision is exercised over subordinate personnel in the absence of a Fire Captain.

Essential Functions

Performs duties in accordance with City's keys to excellent customer service; encourages and promotes a culture of excellent customer service.

Responds to alarms, drives assigned apparatus to required location.

Operates pumps and apparatus at fire scene; regulates water pressure to insure required pressure at nozzle.

Assumes primary responsibility for the servicing, testing and  maintaining fire equipment.

Assists with training personnel in equipment, apparatus and vehicle operation and maintenance.

Assists with maintaining fire apparatus and equipment and cleaning and maintaining fire station and grounds.

Coaches and counsels subordinate personnel; assigns, directs the work of and assists in training subordinate personnel.

Conducts demonstrations and programs for schools and the community.

Installs smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

Participates in fire suppression and emergency rescue activities; provides fire control and/or first respondent medical attention.

Participates in continued training and instruction programs by individual study of technical material and attendance at scheduled drills and classes.

May be required to work outside normal work hours in on-call or emergency situations.

Assumes the duties of the Fire Captain as needed.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of firefighting techniques, procedures and mechanics as applied to fire suppression and pump operation; thorough knowledge of the street system, major buildings, and physical layout of the city; thorough knowledge of operating and maintaining firefighting equipment and apparatus;  general knowledge of emergency medical techniques and procedures; general knowledge of hazardous materials operations and vehicle extraction techniques; ability to operate fire equipment and apparatus safely and effectively; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; possession of mechanical aptitude; physical endurance and agility; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.

 

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED and moderate experience in fire suppression supplemented by training in apparatus operation and maintenance, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Physical Requirements

This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires standing, walking, pushing or pulling and lifting and occasionally requires sitting, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms and tasting or smelling; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), frequently requires working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to vibration and wearing a self contained breathing apparatus and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts and exposure to the risk of electrical shock; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).

 

Special Requirements

Possession of North Carolina Firefighter I and II, Driver/Operator, Emergency Medical Technician-Basic and Hazmat Technician certifications.

Must meet and maintain all minimum state and local training and education requirements for the position.

Valid class driver's license in the State of North Carolina to operate any standard Fire Department vehicle and tow any Fire Department trailer.
