Laboratory Analyst                                     FLSA Status:  Non-Exempt

General Definition of Work

Performs intermediate technical work collecting and analyzing water and wastewater samples, conducting tests and preparing laboratory reports, and related work as apparent or assigned.  Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Laboratory Supervisor.

Essential Functions

Performs basic chemical and physical analyses for the purposes of water and wastewater quality assurance; maintains chain of custody for various samples.

Prepares various analytical standards, quality controls, reagents and solutions.

Operates, tests, maintains and calibrates laboratory instruments and equipment.

Enters data from bench sheets into laboratory database; generates various spreadsheets; reports any unusual results to a laboratory supervisor.

Assists, backs-up and verifies laboratory sampling for surrounding water and wastewater treatment plants.

Monitors water, wastewater and industrial discharge sites; collects and preserves samples as required.

Performs various administrative support functions as required.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

General knowledge of laboratory techniques, materials and equipment, including those used in standard chemical and biochemical analysis of water and wastewater; general knowledge of safe handling of hazardous chemicals; general knowledge of the principles of organic and inorganic chemistry; ability to prepare laboratory reagents and assemble laboratory apparatus for chemical and biochemical analysis; ability to take water and/or sewage samples and perform the necessary laboratory tests; ability to keep records and prepare reports; ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

 

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED and minimal experience in laboratory or water/wastewater treatment plant operations, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Physical Requirements

This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel and frequently walking and sitting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles and Bodily Fluids; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).

 

Special Requirements

Valid driver's license in the State of North Carolina.
