Marketing and Community Relations Manager            FLSA Status:  Exempt

General Definition of Work

Performs advanced technical work developing, implementing and evaluating a comprehensive marketing and public relations program for the Parks and Recreation Department, providing public visibility of the department through written, oral and personal contact with the press, citizens and community groups, and related work as apparent or assigned.  Work is performed under the general direction of the Parks and Recreation Director.

Essential Functions

Performs duties in accordance with the City's keys to excellent customer service.

Plans, prioritizes, implements and reviews a comprehensive marketing and public relations plan for the department; updates, reviews and distributes marketing plan and manual in accordance with city and department policies and procedures.

Serves as a department liaison to public advisory boards, community organizations and other governmental agencies.

Conducts formal presentations and attends special events in order to publicize programs, facilities and events.

Produces press releases, fliers, program brochures, websites and newsletters; coordinates work with newspaper staff, printers and department staff; reviews and adds graphics to seasonal program brochures; creates and maintains department archive of press releases, photographs and videos; maintains and updates the department website.

Provides department training on various marketing components; attends various state, regional and national training programs.

Identifies, completes and submits grant applications for various projects.

Develops and maintains corporate and private sponsorship arrangements; prepares and submits local, state and national award applications.

Participates in the annual budget preparation and manages the daily administration of the division budget; processes and monitors all expenditures, purchasing needs and inventory; reviews, purchases and distributes departmental promotional items.

Researches, prepares and submits applications for local, state and federal grants.

Prepares extensive written reports, forms and correspondence.

Prepares monthly listings and features for the department's programs and events broadcasted on the City's government access stations.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of marketing and public relations techniques; thorough knowledge of the methods and practices of community relations work; thorough knowledge of promotional and technical writing, publishing and graphic design techniques and methods; ability to operate desktop publishing and personal computer and word processing equipment; ability to communicate ideas effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, community agencies, businesses media representatives and the general public.

 

Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree with coursework in communications, journalism, public relations, or related field and moderate experience in marketing and public relations, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 


Physical Requirements

This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting and speaking or hearing and occasionally requires standing and walking; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data; work occasionally requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).

 

Special Requirements

Valid driver's license in the State of North Carolina.
