General Definition of Work

Performs technical work maintaining and repairing automotive and construction equipment, troubleshooting problems, maintaining records and files, and related work as apparent or assigned.  Work is performed under the limited supervision of the assigned departmental supervisor.

Essential Functions

Performs duties in accordance with the City's keys to excellent customer service.

Diagnoses and repairs mechanical and electrical problems with city equipment and vehicles.

Provides preventive maintenance to all city equipment and vehicles.

Performs maintenance work on gas and diesel engines, electrical, brake, transmissions, hydraulic and air systems; performs front-end alignment on vehicles.

Performs grease and oil changes for city equipment and vehicles; fuels vehicles.

Replaces and repairs tires; changes hoses, filters and belts.

Performs welding, cutting and fabrication of steel parts and components.

Operates various tools and machinery in a safe and responsible manner; test drives equipment to verify repair needs.

Keeps supervisor informed of work done and parts used; completes required records.

Prepares and modifies vehicles and equipment to meet city departmental needs.

Maintains and repairs two and four cycle small engines.

Performs safety and emission inspections on city vehicles.

May be required to work outside normal work hours in on-call and emergency situations.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

General knowledge of the methods, tools and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of automotive passenger cars, heavy and medium trucks, construction and maintenance equipment; general knowledge of necessary safety precautions; skill in using and operating tools and machinery used in automotive repair work; ability to detect by inspection worn or broken parts; ability to keep records of repairs and service operations and to prepare reports; ability to adapt available tools and parts to specific repair problems; ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately; ability to lift heavy objects; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

 

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED and minimal experience in mechanical repair work, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Physical Requirements

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel and frequently sitting, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles, frequently requires exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires exposure to the risk of electrical shock; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).

 

Special Requirements

Possession of or ability to obtain a commercial driver's license, OBD II, state inspection, and appropriate ASE certifications within one year of employment.

Valid commercial driver's license in the State of North Carolina.
