Meter Reader                                             FLSA Status:  Non-Exempt

General Definition of Work

Performs technical work locating and reading meters, and related work as apparent or assigned.  Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Meter Services Supervisor.

Essential Functions

Performs duties in accordance with the City's keys to excellent customer service.

Locates and reads water meters on assigned route and records consumption.

Keeps records of meters read and reports meters not accessible for reading.

Checks to see that meters are correctly installed and functioning properly; reports defects and leaks.

Conducts re-reads and reseals meters as directed.

Responds to customer inquiries and instructs customers in the proper reading of meters.

Assists with other utilities duties as necessary.

Performs general administrative support duties as required; answers telephone.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

General knowledge of water service rules and regulations and of the City area; general knowledge of the repair and operation of water meters; ability to make accurate observations; ability to make simple arithmetical calculations; ability to use tools and operate equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.

 

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED and minimal experience in meter reading, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Physical Requirements

This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing and walking, frequently requires sitting, speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel and occasionally requires pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).

 

Special Requirements

Valid driver's license in the State of North Carolina.
