Parts Technician                                        FLSA Status:  Non-Exempt

General Definition of Work

Performs intermediate skilled administrative support work issuing parts and supplies, stocking shelves, picking up parts, maintaining inventory of parts, and related work as apparent or assigned.  Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Fleet Services Supervisor.

Essential Functions

Performs duties in accordance with the City's keys to excellent customer service.

Performs data entry to maintain parts inventory control.

Picks up parts at various vendor locations; receives and properly stores parts and supplies.

Completes work orders; enters parts information into computer system and charges repair orders; codes invoices for appropriate budget account.

Makes copies of and files delivery receipts; maintains invoice and report files; performs general administrative support for division; schedules training and makes related travel arrangements.

Responds to special parts requests from other city departments.

Conducts regular inventory checks on all parts and materials in stock.

Approves fuel reports for purchases; verifies associated inventories.

Confers with vendors regarding parts and supplies as needed; compares and manages parts pricing to reduce costs and maintain the budget.

Helps deliver and pick up vehicles and equipment.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

General knowledge of the availability and procurement of automotive equipment parts and supplies; general knowledge of inventory and related accounting procedures; general knowledge of the repair and maintenance of automotive equipment; general knowledge of business mathematics; general knowledge of standard office procedures; ability to operate standard office equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, vendors and supervisors.

 

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED and moderate experience in stock control and/or stockroom operations, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Physical Requirements

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires sitting and lifting and occasionally requires climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and reaching with hands and arms; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts and occasionally requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to vibration; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).


 

Special Requirements

Possession of or ability to acquire an ASE Parts certification within one year of employment.

Valid commercial driver's license in the State of North Carolina.
