Police Telecommunicator                              FLSA Status:  Non-Exempt

General Definition of Work

Performs intermediate technical work receiving, screening and classifying calls for service, transmitting radio messages and dispatching patrol units to handle such complaints if necessary, and related work as apparent or assigned.  Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Police Lieutenant.

Essential Functions

Performs duties in accordance with the City's keys to excellent customer service.

Receives requests for assistance, determines priorities and dispatch units accordingly.

Receives and disseminates information from the Division of Criminal Information (DCI) computer to establish driver history, vehicle registration and any criminal record; processes hit confirmations on wanted persons, vehicles, etc.; adds, deletes, and alters status of warrants.

Documents and maintains entries and retrievals for the DCI system.

Makes all auxiliary (ambulance, fire, wrecker, animal control, etc.) notifications when required by the nature of the call.

Coordinates assistance with other agencies.

Documents and maintains records on calls for police service.

Operates electronic security devices throughout the building.

Monitors generator and computer alarms and security cameras.

Receives and dispatches service calls for other city departments after normal working hours.

Maintains and operates voice communications recorder; operates two-way radio communications system.

Completes forms for people requesting police surveillance of property.

Performs the duties of the Terminal Agent Coordinator as assigned; validates hot files; verifies accuracy and completeness of entries prior to filing; scans documents into case files; ad misters testing of new employees and recertification; enrolls new employees in training classes; adds and updates system files; trains new employees.

May be required to work outside normal work hours in on-call and emergency situations.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of the geography of the City and location of important buildings; general knowledge of the methods of operating the communications system; general knowledge of radio and teletype procedures; some knowledge of police methods, practices and procedures; ability to speak distinctly; ability to deal with the public under trying conditions; ability to operate communication consoles; ability to acquire and relay information accurately; ability to prepare and maintain accurate detailed records; ability to type at a reasonable rate of speed; ability to multi-task; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.

 

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Physical Requirements

This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires repetitive motions and occasionally requires standing, walking and reaching with hands and arms; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data and observing general surroundings and activities; work has no exposure to environmental conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).

 

Special Requirements

Possession of or ability to acquire appropriate Division of Criminal Information certification within six months.

Valid driver's license in the State of North Carolina.
