Recreation Aide                                          FLSA Status:  Non-Exempt

General Definition of Work

Performs intermediate human support work overseeing activities and programs, assisting with various youth and adult recreation programs, ensuring the safety of program participants, maintaining records, preparing reports, and related work as apparent or assigned.  Work is performed under the close supervision of the assigned departmental supervisor.

Essential Functions

Performs duties in accordance with the City's keys to excellent customer service.

Plans, organizes and conducts various community recreational activities and events.

Evaluates operations and activities under direct responsibility and recommends improvements and modifications.

Submits programming information, which can be useful in preparing reports on operations and activities.

Assists with establishing schedules and methods for an efficient and safe recreation center and grounds usage.

Answers telephone; greets visitors; answers questions and provides information to the public; investigates complaints and recommends corrective action as necessary to resolve complaints.

Conducts inventories of equipment, supplies and games.

Assists with creating schedules for seasonal and temporary instructors and counselors.

Provides transportation by city vehicle for recreational programs when required.

Registers customers for programs offered; checks patrons in for programs and activities.

Collects money for registration, classes, programs, etc.; prepares various reports; maintains records.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

General knowledge of the practices of recreation work; general knowledge of one or more phases of community recreation activities; skill in using instruments; ability to schedule and coordinate a recreation program; ability to provide working leadership to a group of recreation participants; ability to prepare reports; ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with associates, patrons and the general public.

 

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED and minimal experience in recreation program planning, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Physical Requirements

This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires standing and walking and occasionally requires sitting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).

 

Special Requirements

Valid driver's license in the State of North Carolina.
