Recreation Coordinator FLSA
Status: Exempt
General Definition of Work
Performs
difficult technical work planning and supervising recreation programs,
scheduling programs and events, maintaining appropriate records and files,
preparing reports, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the general direction
of the Recreation Program Manager.
Continuous supervision is exercised over Recreation Aides, Recreation
Programmers, seasonal staff and volunteers.

Essential Functions
Performs
duties in accordance with the City's keys to excellent customer service;
encourages and promotes a culture of excellent customer service.
Plans,
develops, organizes and supervises diverse mix of general and specific
recreation and athletic programs and services.
Evaluates
operations and activities of assigned responsibilities; recommends improvements
and modifications.
Assists
with and recommends needed personnel transactions including recruitment,
selection, compensation, evaluation, promotion, transfer, discipline and
termination in conjunction with the Human Resources Department and department
heads.
Administers
various volunteer and seasonal staff training programs and seminars; works with
staff to correct deficiencies; organizes and facilitates staff meetings.
Coordinates
scheduling of programs and activities for assigned facility or area.
Negotiates
and completes contracts with individuals, organizations and businesses
scheduling events or activities; analyzes site requirements and specifications
for propose programs.
Coordinates
the scheduling of staff and volunteers to meet facility or program needs;
coordinates league schedules and tournaments.
Conducts
routine safety inspections of facilities; requests needed repairs; coordinates
capital projects with maintenance manager.
Conducts
inventories of and orders equipment and supplies using departmental purchasing
procedures.
Prepares
various reports on recreation activities and facility utilization.
Prepares
cost estimates for budget recommendations; submits justification for requests;
monitors and controls expenditures within jurisdiction of responsibilities;
seeks alternative sources of funding.
Provides
transportation by city vehicle for recreation programs when required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Thorough
knowledge of the equipment and techniques necessary to successfully conduct
recreation programs; thorough knowledge of the methods involved in organizing,
conducting, promoting and supervising recreation activities; general knowledge
of computer software appropriate to programs; general knowledge of first aid
methods and necessary safety precautions to be used in recreation work; ability
to express ideas clearly both orally and in writing; ability to plan and
supervise the work of subordinates; ability to establish and maintain effective
working relationships with participants, associates and the general public.
Education and Experience
Bachelor's
degree with coursework in recreation, physical education, or related field and
moderate experience in recreation program planning and implementation, or
equivalent combination of education and experience.
Physical Requirements
This work
requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional
exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting and speaking
or hearing and occasionally requires standing, walking and lifting; work has
standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or
exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive
information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing
written or computer data and observing general surroundings and activities;
work frequently requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions; work is
generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
Special Requirements
Possession of or
ability to acquire Parks and Recreation Professional certification within two
years of employment. Possession of CPR and first aid certification.
Valid driver's
license in the State of North Carolina.
