Recreation Programmer FLSA
Status: Exempt
General Definition of Work
Performs
intermediate technical work planning and organizing recreational programs and
services for citizens of all ages, supervising and instructing recreational
programs, training seasonal and volunteer staff, preparing and maintaining
records and files, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate
supervision of the Recreation Coordinator.
Continuous supervision is exercised over Recreation Aides, seasonal
staff and volunteers.

Essential Functions
Performs
duties in accordance with the City's keys to excellent customer service;
encourages and promotes a culture of excellent customer service.
Plans,
organizes, and conducts various community athletics and recreational activities
and events for assigned area.
Greets
visitors and callers; receives and responds to inquiries and complaints or
forwards to appropriate party.
Evaluates
local recreational needs and works with community groups and individuals in
planning program requirements.
Develops
and maintains community and business partnerships in local area.
Evaluates
operations and activities of assigned responsibilities; recommends improvements
and modifications.
Performs
opening and closing procedures for facilities; monitors and ensures facilities
cleanliness; conducts safety inspections and reports maintenance needs.
Creates
and distributes marketing information on events and activities; submits press
releases to marketing personnel; assists with program marketing campaigns.
Supervises
and evaluates contracted and seasonal staff and volunteers; administers various
volunteer and seasonal staff training programs and seminars; creates schedules
for seasonal or temporary instructors and counselors and facilitates staff
meetings.
Prepares
cost estimates for various programs and budget recommendations; submits
justification for requests; monitors and controls expenditures within
jurisdiction of responsibilities; receives, receipts and accounts for various
revenues; makes deposits.
Conducts
inventories of equipment, supplies and games.
Provides
transportation by city vehicle for respective recreational programs when
required.
Prepares
and maintains various records and reports on recreation activities; books
facility reservations; registers patrons for various programs.
Assists
with the recruitment process including interviewing and hiring.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
General
knowledge of the philosophies, principles and practices of public recreation;
general knowledge of the facilities and equipment needed for recreation
programs; general knowledge of human behavior of individuals in groups
participating in recreation activities; general knowledge of computer
applications; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;
ability to develop and implement a recreation program for groups in the
community; ability to prepare and maintain records and reports; ability to plan
and supervise the work of part time and seasonal employees; ability to
establish effective working relationships with associates, program participants
and the general public.
Education and Experience
Bachelor's
degree with coursework in recreation, physical education, or related field and
minimal experience in recreation program planning and implementation, or equivalent
combination of education and experience.
Physical Requirements
This work
requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional
exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting and
speaking or hearing and occasionally requires standing, walking and lifting;
work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for
expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required
to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing
and analyzing written or computer data and observing general surroundings and
activities; work frequently requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions;
work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light
traffic).
Special Requirements
Possession of or
ability to acquire Parks and Recreation Professional certification within five
years of employment. Possession of or ability to acquire first aid and CPR
certification within six months of employment.
Valid driver's
license in the State of North Carolina.
