Residuals Operator                                     FLSA Status:  Non-Exempt

General Definition of Work

Performs intermediate technical work operating and maintaining wastewater treatment plant equipment, performing preventative maintenance on facility buildings and equipment, collecting samples, recording results, maintaining the general cleanliness of the treatment plant, and related work as apparent or assigned.  Work is performed under the general direction of the Residuals Supervisor.

Essential Functions

Performs duties in accordance with the City's keys to excellent customer service.

Performs daily operation of process equipment and related equipment of the wastewater treatment plant facility including tractor-trailer truck, front-end loader, dump truck, etc.

Assists with preventive maintenance on equipment and facility maintenance.

Ensures that all equipment is ready daily and in good operable condition.

Collects and performs residuals quality testing for efficient operations.

Completes daily operational logs and record keeping; follows standard operating procedures to ensure efficient operation of dewatering operations.

Receives, unloads and properly stores plant chemicals.

Cleans, paints and maintains building, pumps, motors, valves and process basins, tanks and equipment; performs general grounds keeping tasks.

May be required to work outside normal work hours in on-call or emergency situations.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

General knowledge of operations and maintenance of wastewater treatment plants and residuals dewatering facilities; general knowledge of principles and practices of wastewater treatment; general understanding of the City's standard operating procedures as they pertain to wastewater treatment plant operations; general knowledge of pertinent federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations related to water/sewer utility; ability to perform basic fiscal and budgetary functions of a water/sewer utility; ability to analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions and implement recommendations in support of goals; ability to effectively carry out a variety of activities related to water/sewer utility; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

 

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED and minimal experience in the area of wastewater treatment, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Physical Requirements

This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires standing and walking and occasionally requires stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using measuring devices, operating machines and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts and occasionally requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment and Bodily Fluids; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).

 

Special Requirements

Possession of or ability to acquire North Carolina Grade II Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator and Land Application Residuals certifications within two years of employment.

Valid commercial driver's license in the State of North Carolina.
