Senior Meter Mechanic                                 FLSA Status:  Non-Exempt

General Definition of Work

Performs intermediate technical work installing, removing, changing, relocating and repairing meters and meter boxes, operating equipment, assisting with the backflow and cross connection program, and related work as apparent or assigned.  Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Meter Services Supervisor.  Continuous supervision is exercised over Meter Mechanic.

Essential Functions

Performs duties in accordance with the City's keys to excellent customer service; encourages and promotes a culture of excellent customer service.

Assists with the backflow and cross connection program; files and inputs data on installations and maintenance testing.

Installs new meters and check valves; replaces defective water meters; tests and calibrates meters.

Performs meter tests and repairs, fixes leaks at meters in the field.

Maintains records of new meters installed and old meters replaced.

Relocates meters and boxes; raises meter boxes; conducts pressure testing.

Assists with meter reading when assigned; connects and disconnects service.

Responds to customer inquiries on issues related to meter repair and replacement.

Performs employee evaluations; prepares reports or letter of review.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of the repair and operation of water meters; general knowledge of water service rules and regulations and of the City area; ability to make accurate observations; ability to make simple arithmetical calculations; ability to use tools and operate equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.

 

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED and moderate experience in meter maintenance, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Physical Requirements

This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing and walking, frequently requires sitting, speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel and occasionally requires pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).

 

Special Requirements

Possession of or ability to acquire Grade A Water Meter Technician and Cross Connection Control certifications.

Valid driver's license in the State of North Carolina.
