Senior Meter Reader                                    FLSA Status:  Non-Exempt

General Definition of Work

Performs difficult semiskilled work planning and scheduling meter services, answering questions for the public, ensuring compliance with division policies and procedures, preparing reports, files and records, and related work as apparent or assigned.  Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Meter Services Supervisor.  Limited supervision is exercised over Meter Services Technician.

Essential Functions

Performs duties in accordance with the City's keys to excellent customer service; encourages and promotes a culture of excellent customer service.

Coordinates and ensures the completion of work orders, including the connection and disconnection of water service.

Reviews and resolves high bill customer complaints as well as other general customer complaints.

Verifies new water tap installation information including meter number, meter location, etc.

Coordinates and arranges meter technician daily routes and schedules; uploads and downloads information from handheld meter reading units; creates reports for customer billing purposes.

Creates and files daily meter reading reports.

Performs minor meter repair and maintenance as necessary.

Trains and reviews policies and procedures with new meter services technicians.

Performs employee evaluations.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

General knowledge of the methods and procedures involved in reading meters and recording consumption; general knowledge of the geography and street locations of the City; ability to use automated consumption recording devices; ability to walk for continuous periods under varying climatic conditions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.

 

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED and moderate experience in meter reading and maintenance, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Physical Requirements

This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking and speaking or hearing, frequently requires sitting and using hands to finger, handle or feel and occasionally requires pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).


 

Special Requirements

Possession of or ability to acquire Grade C Water Meter Technician certification within two years of employment.

Valid driver's license in the State of North Carolina.
