Senior Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator      FLSA Status:  Non-Exempt

General Definition of Work

Performs difficult technical work participating in the operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment plant, and related work as apparent or assigned.  Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Wastewater Treatment Plant Supervisor/ORC.  Continuous supervision is exercised over Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator.

Essential Functions

Performs duties in accordance with the City's keys to excellent customer service; encourages and promotes a culture of excellent customer service.

Oversees and participates in the day-to-day operations of a wastewater treatment facility under the direction and supervision of the Wastewater Treatment Plant Supervisor/ORC.

Collects samples from treatment process and analyze for process and quality control; maintain accurate records of operational and quality control parameters.

Operates, monitors and maintains pumps, motors, valves and all other related treatment process equipment.

Maintains knowledge of the treatment process and procedures and adjusts process or chemical dosages to maintain water quality as specified  by state regulations.

Orders supplies; receives, unloads and properly stores treatment plant chemicals.

Cleans, paints and maintains building, pumps, motors, valves and process basins, tanks and equipment.

Answers questions and provides information to the public; investigates complaints and takes corrective action as necessary.

Assists in initiation, conduct, review and coordination of needed personnel transactions including, recruitment, selection, classification, compensation, evaluation, promotion, transfer, discipline, and termination as directed by the Plant Operations Manager, Assistant Plant Operations Manager, and SRU Management.

Serves as shift supervisor as assigned; verifies operator schedules; trains new employees.

May be required to work outside normal work hours in on-call and emergency situations.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of the operating characteristics and maintenance requirements of the wastewater treatment equipment in the plant; thorough knowledge of hydraulic, chemical and mechanical principles pertinent to wastewater treatment plant operations; thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards of the work and of necessary safety precautions; ability to detect flaws in the operation of mechanical equipment and to determine proper remedial measures; ability to understand and follow moderately complex oral and written instructions; ability to read meters and charts accurately and to maintain records of shift operations; skill in the use and care of laboratory testing and analysis equipment and instruments; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

 

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED and considerable experience in wastewater treatment operations, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Physical Requirements

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking and speaking or hearing, frequently requires sitting and using hands to finger, handle or feel and occasionally requires pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; no special vocal communication skills are required; no special hearing perception is required; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment and Bodily Fluids; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).

 

Special Requirements

Possession of North Carolina Grade II Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator certification.

Valid commercial driver's license in the State of North Carolina.
