Senior Water Treatment Plant Operator             FLSA Status:  Non-Exempt

General Definition of Work

Performs difficult technical work operating a water treatment plant, taking samples, reading gauges and charts, maintaining plant equipment, maintaining records, preparing reports, and related work as apparent or assigned.  Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Water Treatment Plant Supervisor.

Essential Functions

Performs duties in accordance with the City's keys to excellent customer service.

Collects samples from treatment process and analyze for process and quality control; maintain accurate records of operational and quality control parameters.

Operates, monitors, and maintains pumps, motors, valves, and all other related treatment process equipment.

Maintains knowledge of the treatment process and procedures and adjust process or chemical dosages to maintain water quality as specified by state regulations.

Receives, unloads, and properly stores treatment plant chemicals.

Cleans, paints, and maintains building, pumps, motors, valves and process basins, tanks, and equipment; performs general grounds keeping tasks.

Answers questions and provides information to the public; investigates complaints and takes corrective action as necessary.

Serves as shift and laboratory supervisor as assigned or required.

May be required to work outside normal work hours in on-call and emergency situations.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, equipment and methods used in water treatment operations; thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards connected with water plant and related activities and of necessary safety precautions; thorough knowledge of chemistry as applied to water treatment; ability to adjust water pumps, chemical feed machines and other water plant equipment; ability to check the operation of equipment and to detect defects in operation; ability to take accurate readings, to keep records and to make arithmetical computations; skill in the use and care of hand tools; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public, engineers, governmental agency representatives and the general public.

 

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED and considerable experience in the area of water treatment, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Physical Requirements

This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires sitting and occasionally requires climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using measuring devices and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and occasionally requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).

 

Special Requirements

Possession of North Carolina Class C Surface Water Treatment Plant Operator certificate and ability to obtain Class A certification within one year of employment.

Valid commercial driver's license in the State of North Carolina.
