Solid Waste Operations Supervisor FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
General Definition of Work
Performs
intermediate skilled technical work planning, organizing and supervising the
collection of solid waste, assigning solid waste collection crews, inspecting
work, keeping associated records, and related work as apparent or
assigned. Work is performed under the
general direction of the Solid Waste Management Division Manager. Divisional supervision is exercised over all
personnel within the division.

Essential Functions
Performs
duties in accordance with the City's keys to excellent customer service;
encourages and promotes a culture of excellent customer service.
Performs,
plans and supervises division activities, including collection, transportation
and disposal of residential and commercial refuse.
Recommends
and assists with implementing department and division goals and objectives;
establishes schedules and methods for refuse collection and transportation.
Evaluates
operations and activities relative to assigned area of responsibility;
recommends improvements and modifications; prepares various reports on
operations and activities.
Maintains
equipment and supply inventories using departmental purchasing procedures.
Participates
in budget preparation as required by department or division head; prepares cost
estimates and justifications for recommendations.
Assists
with recruiting, selecting, training and evaluating employees; implements
discipline procedures to correct deficiencies.
Develops
and adjusts routes as required or necessary.
Performs
duties of the Solid Waste Equipment Operator as needed or necessary.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Thorough
knowledge of the operation of solid waste collection; thorough knowledge of the
equipment used in solid waste collections; thorough knowledge of the City's
street system; ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of skilled,
semiskilled and unskilled workers; ability to prepare written reports; ability
to establish and maintain effective working relationships with contractors,
associates, regulatory agency representatives and the general public.
Education and Experience
High school
diploma or GED and moderate experience in sanitation work with some supervisory
experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Physical Requirements
This work
requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of
up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force;
work regularly requires sitting and speaking or hearing and occasionally
requires standing, walking, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling
and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is
required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word;
hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work
requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operating machines,
operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and
activities; work frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts and
exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires exposure to
fumes or airborne particles and exposure to vibration; work is generally in a
moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
