Telecommunications Technician FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
General Definition of Work
Performs skilled
technical work maintaining, troubleshooting and repairing electronic
communications devices critical to public safety and utilities communications,
maintaining files and records, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate
supervision of the Telecommunications Manager.

Essential Functions
Performs
duties in accordance with the City's keys to excellent customer service.
Maintains
and repairs the City-wide radio network.
Maintains
the operation of the City's two-way radio system, including radio
communications equipment in the Police, Fire, Public Services and Utilities
Departments, including mobile and portable units.
Repairs
and maintains the City's SCADA system.
Maintains
wireless communication system including two-way radio, mobile data, 911
dispatch centers, etc.
Performs
a variety of diagnostic and analytical tests.
Repairs
equipment as indicated by results of testing.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
General
knowledge of the repair and maintenance of electronic communications devices
and related equipment; thorough knowledge of the methods, materials and
equipment used in the electronics trade; general knowledge of basic electronic
theory, computer hardware and devices, communication networks and the operation
of electronic equipment; thorough knowledge of the necessary safety precautions
of the trade; ability to read and interpret electrical and electronic diagrams
and specifications; ability to establish and maintain effective working
relationships with associates, consultants and the general public.
Education and Experience
High school
diploma or GED and moderate experience in telecommunications/electronics work,
or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Physical Requirements
This work
requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional
exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing,
walking, speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel,
frequently requires sitting and occasionally requires climbing or balancing,
stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms and
lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required
for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is
required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires
preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving
small defects and/or small parts, operating machines and observing general
surroundings and activities; work frequently requires exposure to outdoor
weather conditions and occasionally requires exposure to the risk of electrical
shock; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office,
light traffic).
