Traffic Signal/Communications Technician I       FLSA Status:  Non-Exempt

General Definition of Work

Performs intermediate technical work installing, repairing and maintaining the traffic signal system, maintaining and repairing the City electrical system, and related work as apparent or assigned.  Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Traffic Signal Technician I and Traffic Operations Manager.

Essential Functions

Performs duties in accordance with the City's keys to excellent customer service.

Installs, maintains, repairs, tests and troubleshoots traffic signal equipment, fiber optic cables, phones, phone lines and computer lines.

Works with traffic engineer to coordinate signal system and implements traffic control, traffic counts, speed studies and pedestrian crossings.

Locates underground electrical, fiber optic, computer and telephone cables.

Installs, maintains, repairs, tests and troubleshoots loop in roadway for traffic detection.

Installs, maintains, repairs, tests and troubleshoots opticom on traffic signal for city emergency vehicle to shorten response time.

Investigates complaints relating to traffic signal problems, low hanging cables and lines, broken underground conduit, poles, etc.

Prepares operational records and reports, daily logs, vehicle logs and maintenance records.

Installs, maintains, repairs, tests and troubleshoots 911 emergency phones at specified locations.

Assists with installing, maintaining, repairing, testing and troubleshooting security systems, cameras, projectors, monitors, computers, printers, etc.

Installs, builds and maintains radio towers.

Installs, maintains and repairs school and pedestrian cross walk flashers and signals.

Assists with installing, maintaining and fabricating traffic signs and markings on roadways, parking lots and stalls.

Maintains service vehicles and a clean, safe shop and work area.

Installs decorative or holiday signs and markings.

May be required to work outside normal working hours in on-call and emergency situations.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

General knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment used in the electrical trade and the repair and maintenance of electronic equipment; general knowledge of basic electrical theory and operation of electronic equipment; general knowledge of occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions related to the electrical trade; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability t work outside under inclement weather conditions; ability to operate a bucket truck; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, contractors, engineers and the general public.

 

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED and minimal experience in electrical or electronic systems work, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 


Physical Requirements

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires sitting, climbing or balancing and reaching with hands and arms and occasionally requires pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts and exposure to the risk of electrical shock and occasionally requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to vibration; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).

 

Special Requirements

Valid commercial driver's license in the State of North Carolina.
