Transit Fleet Supervisor FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
General Definition of Work
Performs
difficult technical work planning, organizing and supervising preventative
maintenance and repair operations, performing various technical tasks relative
to assigned area of responsibility, and related work as apparent or
assigned. Work is performed under the
limited supervision of the Fleet Services Supervisor. Divisional supervision is exercised over all
personnel within the division.

Essential Functions
Performs
duties in accordance with the City's keys to excellent customer service;
encourages and promotes a culture of excellent customer service.
Plans,
prioritizes, assigns, supervises and reviews the work of staff involved in
preventative maintenance and mechanical repair of transit fleet and equipment.
Recommends
and assists with implementing department and division goals and objectives.
Establishes
schedules and methods for performing mechanical maintenance on, and providing
services for, city fleet and equipment; implements policies and procedures; meets
with vendors.
Makes
service calls to repair or replace busses on route; brings disabled busses into
shop.
Purchases
and picks up diesel fuel; refuels vehicles and equipment at various locations.
Schedules
environmental cleaning of oil separator, wash bay and pick up of hazardous
material.
Writes
requests for purchase orders and check requests.
Assists
with determining proper level of parts inventory to be maintained; assists the Parts
Manager with completing reports; maintains equipment and supply inventories
using departmental purchasing procedures.
Prepares
repair orders and posts related information to appropriate vehicle records.
Picks
up new vehicles at dealerships; takes equipment to outside vendors for repair
as required.
Maintains
records of motor fuel, oil and tires inventory; prepares various reports and
maintains files.
Schedules
deliveries, picks up vehicles after maintenance and repairs are performed at
offsite vendors.
Maintains
inspection sticker machines; retrieves inspection records and restocks sticker
supplies.
Participates
in selecting staff as required by a department or division head; provides staff
training; works with employees to correct deficiencies; implements discipline
procedures; performs employee evaluations and maintains supporting reports.
May
be required to work outside of normal work hours in on-call or emergency
situations.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Thorough
knowledge of the repair and maintenance of automotive passenger cars, trucks,
construction and maintenance equipment and related terminology; thorough
knowledge of business mathematics; thorough knowledge of the operating and
repair characteristics of various light and heavy duty automotive equipment;
general knowledge of standard office procedures, practices and equipment;
thorough knowledge of the availability and procurement of parts and supplies;
ability to prepare accurate and complete work orders, requisitions and other
related documents; ability to plan and supervise the work of subordinate
workers; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with
associates, vendors and government agencies.
Education and Experience
High school
diploma or GED and considerable experience in automotive repair and maintenance
work, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Physical Requirements
This work
requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of
up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force;
work regularly requires sitting and speaking or hearing, frequently requires
standing, walking and using hands to finger, handle or feel and occasionally
requires pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements;
vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of
the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken
word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data,
visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operating
machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general
surroundings and activities; work frequently requires working near moving
mechanical parts and exposure to fumes or airborne particles and occasionally
requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions; work is generally in a loud
noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
Special Requirements
Possession of or
ability to acquire a North Carolina Motor Vehicle Inspector's license.
Valid commercial
