Transit Service Worker/Transit Operator            FLSA Status:  Non-Exempt

General Definition of Work

Performs intermediate semiskilled work maintaining a clean fleet of transit vehicles, inspecting buses to ensure they are safe and fueled, performing the duties of a Transit Operator, and related work as apparent or assigned.  Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Transit Manager.

Essential Functions

Performs duties in accordance with the City's keys to excellent customer service.

Answers telephone calls and assists customers.

Maintains a clean fleet of transit vehicles; maintains a neat and orderly garage, office area, bathroom, bus shelters and bus stops.

Inspects buses to ensure they are safe and fueled and in operable condition; performs basic mechanical work and road tests vehicles following repair work.

Substitutes for Transit Operators; operates a bus on a fixed route system; accounts for and maintains records for money, riders and other statistical information.

Assists Transit Dispatcher by answering and responding to the telephone and radio.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of cleaning materials, supplies and equipment; thorough knowledge of appropriate inspection process to ensure vehicle readiness; general knowledge of regional traffic rules and regulations; general knowledge of the geography of the City; ability to operate passenger vehicles and related equipment safely and efficiently; ability to remain alert and to remain calm during the periods of stress; ability to keep records and prepare reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients and associates.

 

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Physical Requirements

This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and reaching with hands and arms, frequently requires walking, sitting and stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and occasionally requires climbing or balancing, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to vibration and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).

 

Special Requirements

Valid commercial driver's license with Class B endorsement in the State of North Carolina.
