Urban Design Planner FLSA
Status: Exempt
General Definition of Work
Performs
intermediate professional work coordinating urban design and public property
activities, providing staff support to various commissions and committees,
conducting research, preparing reports, files and records, and related work as
apparent or assigned. Work is performed
under the limited supervision of the Planning and Community Development
Director. Limited supervision is exercised
over administrative support personnel.

Essential Functions
Performs
duties in accordance with the City's keys to excellent customer service;
encourages and promotes a culture of excellent customer service.
Designs
and prepares construction documents for improvement to public streetscapes and
other public spaces.
Prepares
and manages budgets for assigned projects.
Manages
bid process and contracts for improvement to public streetscapes and other
public spaces.
Writes
grant requests and manages grant funds; administers various grant programs for
the City through the Community Appearance Commission.
Serves
as staff to various groups and committees, including the Public Arts Committee,
Community Appearance Commission and Tree Board.
Serves
on various committees and subcommittees for the City and other public or
non-profit entities.
Prepares
and presents presentations to the City Council, civic clubs, and other
agencies.
Prepares
various program related reports, correspondence, etc.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Thorough
knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of planning, design,
development of urban and regional areas, historic preservation and planning
research activities; thorough knowledge of the various codes and regulations
pertaining to historic preservation, urban design, land use planning and
zoning; general knowledge of research methodology and of standard statistical
procedures; skill in using modern drafting equipment; ability to present the
results of research effectively in oral, written and graphic form; ability to
establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, elected
officials, consultants, engineers, outside agencies and the general public.
Education and Experience
Bachelor's
degree with coursework in landscape architecture, architecture, urban planning,
or related field and considerable experience in urban design planning or
natural resource management, or equivalent combination of education and
experience.
Physical Requirements
This work
requires the occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force; work regularly
requires sitting and speaking or hearing, frequently requires using hands to
finger, handle or feel and occasionally requires standing, walking and lifting;
work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for
expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required
to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing
and analyzing written or computer data and observing general surroundings and
activities; work occasionally requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions;
work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light
traffic).
Special Requirements
Possession of
registration as Registered Landscape Architect from the American Institute of
Architects or certification from the American Institute of Certified Planners
upon employment.

license in the State of
