Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator               FLSA Status:  Non-Exempt

General Definition of Work

Performs intermediate technical work operating a wastewater treatment plant, collecting samples, recording results, operating and maintaining sludge drying process, preparing and maintaining records on plant operations, and related work as apparent or assigned.  Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Wastewater Treatment Plant Supervisor/ORC.

Essential Functions

Performs duties in accordance with the City's keys to excellent customer service.

Collects samples from treatment process and analyze for process and quality control; maintains accurate records of operational and quality control parameters.

Operates, monitors and maintains pumps, motors, valves and all other related treatment process equipment.

Maintains knowledge of the treatment process and procedures and adjusts process of chemical dosages to maintain water quality as specified by state regulations).

Receives, unloads, and properly stores treatment plant chemicals.

Cleans, paints and maintains building, pump, motors, valves and process basins, tanks, and equipment; performs general grounds keeping tasks.

Answers questions and provides information to the public; investigates complaints and takes corrective action as necessary.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

General knowledge of the operating characteristics and maintenance requirements of a wastewater treatment plant; general knowledge of hydraulic, chemical and mechanical principles pertinent to wastewater treatment plant operations; general knowledge of occupational hazards of the work and of necessary safety precautions; ability to detect flaws in the operation of mechanical equipment and to determine proper remedial measures; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to read meters and charts accurately and to maintain records of shift operations; some skill in the use and care of hand tools; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, engineers and the general public.

 

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED and moderate experience in wastewater treatment operations, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Physical Requirements

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking and speaking or hearing, frequently requires sitting and using hands to finger, handle or feel and occasionally requires pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment and Bodily Fluids; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).

 

Special Requirements

Possession of or ability to acquire North Carolina Grade II Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator certification within two years of employment.

Valid commercial driver's license in the State of North Carolina.
