Greenway Tree-Lighting Ceremony Offers
Treats for Nature

December 2003

The LandTrust for Central North Carolina held a Greenway
Tree Lighting Ceremony on the evening of Monday, December 8, 2003. Second-graders from Knollwood Elementary and sixth-graders from Erwin Middle School created and hung holiday ornaments of bread, pine cones, peanut butter and birdseed on hardwood trees. The decorations will provide an unexpected holiday feast for nature's friends. Battery-powered lights were utilized for the ceremony and removed the following day.

Salisbury Mayor Susan Kluttz, Landtrust Board Chairman Dr. John Wear and Executive Director Jason Walser spoke briefly at the ceremony.  Barbara Lawther of the LandTrust led the group in holiday carols.  Attendees enjoyed hot cider and cookies during the hour-long festivities. The LandTrust works to conserve large tracts of forest and farmland throughout its 10-county region.

The Greenway provides recreational areas and linear parks throughout the city for walking, biking and jogging.  In addition, the Greenway supplies open space and natural areas for environmental education and wildlife preservation.
For further information regarding the Greenway or to make a donation to support the Greenway, please call the Salisbury Parks & Recreation Department at (704) 638-5291.
