Celebrate July with Salisbury Parks & Recreation
July 2005
The
Salisbury Parks & Recreation Department cordially invites
individuals to visit and enjoy its recreation centers, parks, the
gym and greenway system during the month of July. Celebrate July,
part of a month long national recreation celebration, emphasizes
recreational programming and the benefits of Parks and
Recreation.
City Council recently
passed a proclamation designating July as Parks and Recreation Month
in Salisbury.
In an effort to increase youth fitness and to fight childhood
obesity, the Parks & Recreation Department will give away eight FREE
Bicycles and four FREE Sports baskets during the Celebrate July event.
Children, ages five through twelve, are encouraged to visit the Civic Center, 315
S. Boundary; City Park Center, 316 Lake Drive, Miller Center, 1402
W. Bank Street and Hall Gym, 1400 W. Bank Street during July and
participate in planned activities and register for the prizes.
Children can register once a day, at each location, during July.
Karen Wilkinson, Marketing and Community Relations Manager for Parks
& Recreation states, “By encouraging children to visit our
facilities, we hope to create awareness for our numerous athletic
programs and recreational events while promoting fitness and
encouraging healthy lifestyles.”
Recreation Centers and Hall Gym are decorated in support of the
celebration. Wilkinson adds,
“Our associates are proud to provide quality leisure services
through safe, attractive, maintained parks and diversified programs
that meet the current and future needs of our community.” In
addition, Chipper, the department’s squirrel mascot, will join team
efforts to encourage exercise and fitness by making random surprise
visits throughout the City during July to offer free sports
giveaways.
Winners of the bicycles and sports baskets will be announced in
August. In addition, bike winners will receive free bike locks and
helmets. Giveaway items were made available through the Park
Partners fundraising program, which provides funding for community
outreach, fitness education and parks awareness. For

Chipper Encourages
Kids to Read through the Salisbury Parks & Recreation "Seeds to
Read" Reading Enrichment Program
February 2005
The Salisbury Parks & Recreation Department kicked-off their “Seeds
to Read” program on Monday, February 21, 2005 at the City Park
Center, 316 Lake Drive. The afternoon program incorporated Chipper
the
Squirrel
and taught the importance of reading skills as Chipper found himself
in one dilemma after another, due to his continuous refusal to read.
The Parks & Recreation Department hopes to distribute over
1,000 FREE books to local children during 2005.”
The
program incorporates Chipper and offers reading awareness,
storytelling, a Seeds to Read graduation ceremony, complete with a
reception and photos with Chipper for all participants.
In support of the Seeds to Read initiative, recreational
staff currently offers weekly field trips to the Rowan Public
Library, through the after-school programs. In addition, after
school children receive daily assistance with reading through
homework support. “Our recreational team views this community
outreach as a strong and vital commitment to the citizens of
Salisbury and their children,” states Karen Wilkinson.
Seeds to Read programs will continue to be offered throughout the
year. |
