What Is A Greenway Anyway? |
|
The Salisbury Parks & Recreation
Department cordially invites citizens to
enjoy the Salisbury Greenway System. Greenways are
recreational
areas
and linear parks
throughout the city of Salisbury for walking, biking and
jogging. In addition, Greenways supply
open space and
natural areas
for environmental education and wildlife preservation and
drastically increase property values and
quality of life in areas
where a Greenway system is present. |

Tell Me About the Salisbury Greenway |
|
The Salisbury Parks and Recreation
Department currently maintains
five Greenway sections totaling approximately 2.5 miles. Through
five-year
corporate sponsorships, the Greenway receives additional
funding for promotion and maintenance of three sections of the
Greenway.
The
Prescott Connector, which
begins near Overton Elementary School, includes a covered bridge and
measures approximately 2,820 feet. This section, sponsored by Hap
and Annette Roberts of
Statewide Title, Inc. is the site of the Earth
Day Celebration, Greenway Growlers, 5K Run/Walk for the Greenway and
the Land Trust Tree Lighting.
The
Forest Hills section, located between Mahaley Avenue and Grove
Street, receives sponsorship support from
Rowan Regional Medical
Center. Hospital associates and visitors are encouraged to include
the Greenway into their daily walks and fitness breaks to promote a
lifestyle of well-being. The Forest Hills section is approximately
1,700 ft. and includes a bridge and a playground area.
The
Memorial Park Loop
section of the Salisbury Greenway is located at Grove Street and is
adjacent to the Memorial Park Cemetery. This tranquil, peaceful
2,463 ft. section of the Greenway, sponsored by
Summersett Funeral Home, Inc., includes a bridge and
encircles a scenic lake with visible wildlife.
The
fourth section, located within
Kelsey Scott Park
on Old Wilkesboro
Road, crosses a Disc Golf Course and passes a playground, picnic
area and a ball field as it winds toward Union Hill/Oakdale
Cemetery. This section is approximately 1,890 feet in length.
The fifth and most recent addition to the Salisbury Greenway
System
encompasses 3,900 feet. Beginning at the Harris Teeter Shopping
Center, the section winds along
Brenner Avenue toward the Old
Wilkesboro Road intersection where it crosses the road and continues
along Union Hill/Oakdale Cemetery toward West Horah Street.
