|

One
of Salisbury High's outstanding athletes.
He won all-state and all southern honors
in football.
He also played
baseball and basketball and was a star player at Duke University.
He was voted to Duke's all-time football team
and was the 1954 ACC player of the year.
His career also included playing in several college bowl games.

Billy Ray Barnes |

Billy
Ray Barnes was a three-sport
star (football, basketball and
baseball) at Landis High School. He won All-American honors at Wake
Forest and was the first ACC back to ruse for over 1,000 yards in a
single season.
He was also a NCAA champion in baseball and football.
In addition, he was all pro in the NFL, playing with the Eagles, Redskins and Vikings in
1950's and 60's.
He currently resides in Landis.
A notable sportscaster once said about Billy Ray Barnes, "If there was a ball in it, he could play it well." |

Joe
Ferebee |
Joe
Ferebee coached at Salisbury
High School, Rowan County Legion and Pfeiffer University. He was a
three-sport
star at Catawba College and has been voted to numerous Hall of Fames, including
Catawba College, Pfeiffer University, the North Carolina American Legion,
NAIA, the American Coaches Association and the NCAA Division II.
He
also led North
Carolina in Legion and college baseball victories. He was a
true "Mr. Baseball." He began coaching in 1950 and retired in 1989.
He
also started the Rowan County Legion winning tradition. |

Christy (Earnhardt) McKinney |
Christy
(Earnhardt) McKinney led
East Rowan High School to a Western Conference Championship. She was
the first
woman to score 1,000 points in a "modern" high school era.
She
was named an All American at North Carolina State University.
She
later became the assistant coach at Western Kentucky University and
is currently the active head
coach at Rice University.
She
also attended the first NCAA tournament ever. |

Spencer
Wellington Lancaster (1904-1996) |
Spencer
Wellington Lancaster was an outstanding
coach at Salisbury Price where he led the Red Devils to numerous state championships.
He
was a 1934
graduate of Livingstone College and later went on to coach Livingstone College football and
basketball coach for 29 1/2 years. Under his command Livingstone
Collage won the 1940 state championship for football (11
football games - undefeated, untied, not scored on, total points
330-0.) They also won the 1951 State Football Championship.
Salisbury High
School each year awards the S.W.
Lancaster Athletic Award to student who shows exemplary
sportsmanship.
S.W.
Lancaster, otherwise know as, "The Prof" holds outstanding records as player and
a coach and was an extraordinary mentor to young people in athletics and education. |

Robert Pulliam |
|
Robert
Pulliam was a Salisbury
High School and a University of Tennessee star football player who
is now a veteran football coach.
He is a 1971
Salisbury High School graduate as well as an 1971 All-County, All Conference, All-State,
and All-American football player.
He played in the 1971 Shrine Bowl.
He was also a 1970/71 wrestling champion.
In the same time period is was also
named All County and All Conference in track and field.

ever saw in high school football. He has distinguished himself as a teacher, coach and mentor of
young people by learning the value of hard work, perseverance and self-reliance."

Life-time Achievement Award |
Horace
Billings was the Dean
of the North
Carolina Sports Editors when he retired
from the Salisbury Post.
He was with the
Salisbury Post for 52
years as a sportswriter and editor covering local and
national events and has won numerous awards for
sports writing over his fulfilling career.
